Mel Stuart’s final directorial tour-de-force charts the journey of a group of students from George Washington Prep High School, with the support and mentorship of British actors and industry professionals, under the directorship of Dr. Melanie Andrews. That journey culminates in two public performances of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, at the Ladera Heights Amphitheatre, thanks to the support of LA County Parks and Recreation. READ MORE....

The documentary covers the auditions, rehearsals, final preparations and actual performances, as we get to know an engaging cast of students, teachers and mentors, as they work together to learn the language of the Bard and present an exciting and moving production.

Shakespeare’s classic tale of inter-family warfare is a story that the students are readily able to relate to. The experience is life changing for students and mentors alike, as they discover unexpected gifts within themselves and revel in the discovery of a whole new language. Barriers of race and culture fade away, once they become immersed in the 16th Century world of the Montagues and Capulets. Gang ties are cut and fear of failure is banished as they swim through uncharted waters.

Most of the student performers are in college now, carrying with them the sense of accomplishment that they achieved through this experience. In 2012 George Washington Prep presented Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and plans are underway to expand the program this year with a production of Twelfth Night with both George Washington Prep and LA High School.
